The heart is situated in the focal point of the chest, simply behind the sternum, sitting in an empty cavity between the lungs. The heart is marginally bigger than your clench hand. It is around five inches in length, three inches wide, and two inches thick. The heart is normally spoken to in the natural Valentine shape, yet it really takes after a grapefruit. The outer highlights of the heart comprise of the pericardium. The capacity of the pericardium is to help and ensure the heart. Within the pericardium is fixed with a layer that privileged insights a grease liquid which permits the pericardium to slide easily over the surface as the heart siphons. The inward highlights of the heart are a lot more confounded than the outside highlights. The primary highlights inside are the hearts four empty spaces, which are alluded to as the chambers (Clayman 86). The siphoning some portion of the heart comprises of two exceptionally slight walled upper chambers, which are given the name atria. The two thick-walled lower offices of the heart are called ventricles. The divider that partitions the correct side of the heart from the left is known as the septum. The muscles in these dividers of the chambers give the siphoning activity of the heart. These muscles cause the chamber to contract commandingly when the heart thumps, which pushes blood through the body. The offices of the heart can be isolated into three layers. The most significant of the three is the myocardium, which contains the muscles of the heart. The other two are known as the endocardium and the epicardium. The heart has a left and right side, which contains these chambers and ventricles. There are four valves, which help in the capacity of keeping blood streaming the correct way (Katz 75). Two of these are known as the atrio-ventricular valves. These two are named the mitral valve and the tricuspid valve. These valves permit the blood to spill out of every chamber into the comparing ventricle. The mitral valve associates the left chamber to one side ventricle, while the tricuspid interfaces the correct chamber to the correct ventricle. The other two valves in the heart permit blood to stream to the body from the ventricles however keep blood from streaming in reverse into the ventricles from the body. These valves are known as the semilunar valves. They are named this since they are to some degree molded like a bow moon. The aortic semilunar valve permits blood to leave the left ventricle and enter the aorta. The aorta conveys blood to the body tissues. The other valve is known as the aspiratory similunar valve, which permits blood to leave the correct ventricle and enter the pneumonic courses. These veins convey blood to the lungs to ingest oxygen, which is basic to our reality. These valves are intended to move blood one way in particular, except if harmed by injury or illness. The heart can be seen as a decisively structured two-phase siphon. The main stage is the two atria, whose capacity is to guarantee that the ventricles are completely expanded with blood. At the point when this happens, the ventricles agreement to drive blood out into the body. Albeit the two sides of the heart contract simultaneously, they have totally different capacities. The correct side of the heart gets oxygen free blood from the body and siphons it to the lungs. The left side gets oxygen rich blood from the lungs and siphons it to the remainder of the body (Katz 95). Every red platelet goes through the heart twice on its approach to tissues. The venae cavae helps in this procedure by restoring the deoxygenated blood to the heart. The venae cavae is additionally the biggest vein in the body. Summer Ideas for Juniors Who Are Interested in Entrepreneurship TKG

Summer Ideas for Juniors Who Are Interested in Entrepreneurship The Bitcoin revolution has demonstrated one thingâ€"innovation rules the roost. With the expansion of the Internet of Things, the cryptocurrency market, the sharing economy, and every other advancement that has descended upon Silicon Valley in the last few years, innovators and technologists are chomping at the bit to bring the world the latest revolution. For the rising stars of tomorrow’s workforce, now is the moment to develop vision and entrepreneurial acumen. If you don’t launch your first startup at 17, that’s ok. Elon Musk didn’t start Zip2 until he was 24, but believe it or not, right now, when you’re still in high school, when you have no kids, no mortgage, and no job that demands 40+ of your hours each week, is as good a time as any for you young entrepreneurs to get going with your dreams. In the book Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell recounts the journeys of some of today’s greatest entrepreneurial minds. According to Gladwell, it wasn’t sheer genius that set Bill G ates apart, but rather, hours he spent in his free time as a kid developing an expertise in computers. As Gladwell notes, Gates did not only become an expert in computer language, but he also secured an internship with a tech company that allowed him to dive further into the world from a young age.Consider the summer between junior and senior years, not only a great time to get started on your next big idea, but also an opportunity to get ahead in the college process when your competition will still be at summer camp.Be Specific According to Gladwell, Gates invested over 10,000 hours in working on the computer. So, it wasn’t just that Gates was a genius businessman or scientific innovator, he had a niche. If you know you want to dive into the startup world, try honing in on a specific area. That might seem like a scary idea at 17, but you can always change your mind later. So, for now, reflect upon the kinds of things you like, the things you already spend time reading up on, and just take the next best step. Don’t just be interested in entrepreneurship, or even tech entrepreneurship. That’s too generic. If you like the idea of tech entrepreneurship around travel, healthcare, or cryptocurrencies, choose it, and go full throttle for now.Enroll in a Rigorous College Course Many of the nation’s top universities offer summer-session college courses for high school students. If you’re interested in starting a business, it might be a good idea to learn from some of the nation’s top academics. If you’d like to split your summer between a course and say, an internship, check out one of the shorter immersive programs. Berkeley’s Haas School of Business offers a two-week program in entrepreneurship.   Georgetown offers a one-week program for young entrepreneurs. Columbia also offers an immersive one-week course on entrepreneurship in which high schoolers can learn about business modeling. Babson College offers a longer, four-week program in which high sc hoolers actually conceptualize a new venture during the course. Even though taking a college course won’t increase your chances with the particular university where you study, it will look good on your resume overall.Secure an Impressive Internship   Snagging an internship is another great way to invest your time this summer. If you go this route, your goal should be to secure something prestigious. Many of the major companies out there don’t offer structured internship programs for high schoolers. That’s okay. While it might mean a bit of extra research and outreach on your part, designing and securing your own internship will put you ahead of your competition.Try to secure something at a more established company like AirBnB, Uber, WeWork, or Linkedin. Alternatively, catch up with your startup news and try getting in with an organization that is on its way to being the next big thing like Lola, Acorns, or InstaCart, to name a few. If you really want to gain some insight into what it takes to build a company from the ground up, find a startup that interests you that is closer to the ground floor (perhaps one that has secured some round of funding so you know it probably won’t fold by the end of the summer) and jump right in.  The goal of this internship should be to learn as much as possible, find a mentor, and build relationships that will help you in professional endeavors down the line. If you will just be getting coffee and making copies, don’t take it. Your best bet is to go in with a really clear idea of what you want to learn and then reach out to the people inside of that organization who could support you in getting there. If you need some help securing a hard-to-land internship or designing your own, reach out to us. We’ve set many of our students up with impressive internships.  Launch Your Own Startup  For every Facebook, there are a thousand others ventures that flopped. Hardly anyone makes it on the first go. While the prospect of f ailure can be intimidating, the idea is that in order to reap the rewards, entrepreneurs must take risks. While launching your endeavor might sound risky, there may be no better time in your life than the present to get going on your dream. Why not invest your time this summer in getting a leg up on your own big idea?If you’re going to launch your own startup this summer, be sure you have a roadmap. If you’ve already developed a business plan, consider taking it full throttle. If you are just getting started, consider taking a college course or an internship and using your spare time to find a successful entrepreneur (or team of entrepreneurs) to mentor you and help you develop your idea.Need help securing a competitive internship? Canterbury Tales Essay - Anti-Feminist Rhetoric in The...

Anti-Feminist Rhetoric in The Wife Of Bath In Geoffrey Chaucers The Canterbury Tales, The Wife of Bath is a strong woman who loudly states her opinions about the antifeminist sentiments popular at the time. Chaucer, however, frequently discredits her arguments by making them unfounded and generally compromising her character. This brings into question Chaucers political intent with the Wife of Bath. Is he supportive of her views, or is he making a mockery of woman who challenge the patriarchal society and its restriction and mistrust of women? The Wifes comedic character, frequent misquoting of authorities, marital infidelity, and her (as well as Chaucers) own antifeminist sentiments weaken the argument that Chaucer supported†¦show more content†¦Another example of the Wifes comedy is when she tells her soon-to-be fifth husband of a fictitious dream involving blood. She credits her mother with the idea, but it is ridiculous because after her fourth husband, she is clearly not a virgin. The Wife seems oblivious to thi s, which makes it all the more humorous and discredits her further. Perhaps the most ruinous of the Wifes characteristics is her frequent misquoting of authorities. Assuming that the editors of The Norton Anthology are correct, and that Chaucer knew that the Wifes claims were incorrect, the frequency of her false authoritative references diminishes the credibility of her arguments. During her prologue, she uses the story of Jesus meeting the Samaritan woman at the well to question the Bibles view of remarriage. As Norton points out, Jesus is denouncing the womans sixth lover, to whom she is not yet married. She misquotes the Bible again in her comment about white and barley bread . According to Norton, it is actually John, not Mark, who mentions the barley bread. A third misquote occurs during her prologue: Whoso that nil be war by othere men,/By him shal othere men corrected be. Again, according to Norton, this passage does not appear anywhere in Ptolemys Almagest. While the Wife is rattling on about her high ideals in marriage, Chaucer hints at her infidelity. Words like â€Å"freedom† and â€Å"democracy† act as ideographs in that they have cer tain connotations and that are then manipulated according to the cultural situation. An ideograph as outlined by McGee has four critical characteristics: it is able to warrant power or guide behavior; it is used in political discourse; it is an abstraction representing collective commitment; and it is culture-bound (205-209). Janis L. Edwards and Carol K. Winkler in their study â€Å"Representative Form and the Visual Ideograph: The Iwo Jima Image in Editorial Cartoons† argue against Michael McGee’s belief that ideographs are limited to verbal language (198-212). They protest that visual images can also be used as ideographs because they fulfill McGee’s formulated features of an ideograph and are not merely icons, which are visual representations of words that always symbolize the same concept or idea. The utilization of Mount Rushmore in editorial cartoons functions as an example of a visual ideograph as distinguished by Edwards and Winkler. Through an analysis of editorial cartoons with the Mount Rushmore image, I will provide further evidence to Edwards’s and Winkler’s claim that visual images can exist as ideographs by fulfilling the major characteristics of an ideograph as defined by McGee.Show MoreRelatedThe Moai Statues of Easter Island: Rapa Nui Essay982 Words   |  4 Pagesonce great complex. b. Role of the Fool in King Lear Essay Example

Role of the Fool in King Lear Essay Wisdom and insight gives the ability to make common sense and to discern or judge what is true, right or lasting. Man is not logical and his intellectual capability is not complete without being compromised with wisdom and insight. In the play King Lear, William Shakespeare shows the journey of the once king of England as he falls from grace to despair. In his and insecure state King Lear steps out of his role by giving up all his power, reaches the peak of madness and loses his life just as he comes to understand it. The journey of King Lear of attaining wisdom and insight is necessary as he learns from the hardships of taking foolish actions in the beginning, progresses by realizing his mistakes and blindness, and gains wisdom and insight towards the end.In the beginning of King Lear, Lear steps out of his role and takes foolish actions and loses all influence by falling for the insincerity that surrounds him. King Lear begins the play by making the single, most foolish mistake of d ividing his kingdom and giving power to the wrong hands. The kings unwise decision of division based on the daughter who professes the most love for him causes the downfall of the play and starts his slippery slope towards madness. His actions are understood by all except himself as he asks the question, Who is it that can tell me who I am? (I, IV, 226) and is given the reply, Lears shadow. (I, IV, 227).Furthermore, Lear is blind to his two older daughters hypocritical pledges of love and is foolish enough to trust them with his livelihood. He values appearances over reality and cannot see the greed and motives of those who are supposedly closest to him. Regan and Goneril are both able to deceive him easily, as Lear hears only what he wants. Moreover, King Lear is quick to judgment of banishing not only his youngest and most beloved daughter, Cordelia, but also one of his most loyal servants, Kent. He cannot comprehend the sincerity of Cordelias echoed words of saying Nothing (I, I, 94) and then moves to strip her of his love and titles. Lears overreaction and foolish actions plainly show his getting old before becoming wise.As the plot of the play progresses, the fool acts as indirect guide to Lear who enables him to understand his situation as he learns of his blindness and madness and the forces working against him. Goneril and Regan surpass Lears threshold for sanity and he is thrown out into the elements and left to find himself. The fools first entrance shows the essence of his existence in the play. Lears descent toward madness is shown explicitly when he cries, O fool, I shall go mad! The fool indirectly leads the king acting as inner-conscience of the king. He draws the king towards and an example of this is when the fool exclaims to the king, Prithee, nuncleswim in.(III, IV, 113-114).The fool reveals truth and honesty to all. The fool shows the king the mistakes he makes as he expresses his thoughts about the decision the king made in the beginning, I have own breeches. (I, IV, 169-171). The king is blind to all this until the fool reveals it to him. The fool tells the king that he would be a good fool but if he was his fool he would have thee beaten for being old before they time. (I, V, 41). Through the guide of the fool acting as his inner conscience and revealing truth the king understand and realizes his own blindness. After being inspired by the fool, Lear realizes his new found insight, his ability to see beyond appearances, and understand his mistakes. In the end, Lear is finally able to notice how others have treated him. Through the mock trial he sorts out all the evil and comprehends all that happened during the play. It is after the trial that the fool leaves the play as his job is over and the king can see clearly for himself. Lear expresses his understanding when he says, they flattered me like a dog(III, VI, 112-116). He realizes his mistakes and regrets them. When Cordelia shows up he say, I pray weep notthey have not.(IV, VII, 81-85). In addition, he begins to see clearly of his surroundings. His ability to see is also evident towards the end when he finally recognizes Kent. In the end Lear gains wisdom and insight, however, dies out of a broken heart.King Lears journey can be traced through his absence of wisdom and insight which is replaced with the vital role of the fool who allows the king to come back to sanity with a clear insight of his surroundings. Through the play, King Lear, Shakespeare shows the necessity of the journey for gaining insight and wisdom. He portrays this in the role he gives to the fool of representing these two important qualities.Human beings tend to be misguided by their misinterpretations and lack of knowledge of their surroundings. It is not until they gain wisdom and insight that they begin to see through a broad and clear window. As is often done in reality, the life of King Lear is shaped by his own hands and his inability to make the wise decision at the b eginning of it.

Middle-Class Citizens in the 19th and 20th Centuries essays

Middle-Class Citizens in the 19th and 20th Centuries essays Some people rejected the notion that anyone could make it to a higher plateau in social status, but "others aspired to middle-class status" (pg.59). Middle-class citizens were suburban homeowners that held positions like "lawyers, doctors, businessmen, ministers, bank tellers, newspaper editors, and even schoolteachers" (pg.60). The middle-class status was a position of prestige in the late 19th early 20th centuries. Although the fears of the middle-class were not as realistic as those of the poor, they did live with certain fears that were unique to their class. Women lived with the fear that they would not be accepted because of a lack of beauty. Middle-class women were expected to be as beautiful as possible. An ad selling massage cream for skin read "the Pompeian complexion immediately wins the mother, as it does in every other instance in social or business life" (pg.70). Men had cosmetic fear also which was the fear of blood-poisoning from a shaving soap that used animal fat. T hey would only use the highest quality products that would not damage their skin. Also, being that some middle-class men were store owners, they feared their stores being robbed. So, they were well equipped with the firearms needed to drive off any offenders. The family as a whole had fears also. They feared diseases like croup attacking their newborn babies, their young children being bombarded with negative media and other negative influences in general, and having to struggle during old age. They bought products to protect their babies against disease. They bought wholesome magazines, music machines, and bicycles to keep their children (mostly sons) out of reach of bad influences. They also bought insurance policies to ensure their well-being as senior citizens. The values of middle-class citizens were in some ways like those of the rich. Women were housewives in most cases. They did the housework with the latest and greatest improvements in technol...

Therefore, managerial accounting information is highly confidential in nature. Business Ethics Issues in the Movie Boiler Room Essay -- business ethi

Business ethics issues in the movie â€Å"Boiler room† Business comprises principles and standards that guide behavior in the world of business. Stakeholders-investors, customers, interest groups, employees, the legal system, and the community often determine whether a specific behavior is right or wrong, ethical or unethical. Judgments of these groups influence society’s acceptance or rejection of a business and it’s activities. Every business has a social responsibility toward society. That means to maximize positive affects and minimize negative affects on the society. Social responsibilities includes economic-to produce goods and services, that society needs at the price, that satisfy both-business and consumers, legal responsibility-laws that business must obey, ethical responsibilities-behaviors and activities that are expected of business by society, but are not codified in the law, philanthropic responsibilities-represent the company’s desire to give back to society (charietys, volunteering, sponsoring). Ethical issues in business arise because of conflicts between an individuals personal moral philosophies and values and values or attitudes of organization in which a person works and a society in which one lives. Ethical issues can be identified in terms of the major participants and functions of business. Ethical issues related to ownership include conflicts between manager’s duties to the owners and their own interests, also separation of ownership and control of business. Financial issue includes, for example, the accuracy of reported financial documents. Ethical issues can acquire between manages and employees, then employees are asked to carry out assignments they consider unethical. Consumers and marketing issues are related to providing safe desired products for a fear price and not harming people and an environment. Accountants also face ethical dilemma, they have to deal with competition advertising commission. All of this places the accounting profession in situatio n of ethical risk. Ethical issues are also classified, as conflict of interest-when person has to choose between his own interests and company’s interests. Communications-false and misleading communications can destroy costumer’s trust, for example, false advertisement, hard sell etc. Technology issue refers to both costumers and organizations. Using technology many bus... ...d to deal with all those issues during a movie. He felt a pressure from his father, who was a judge, had very high standards, and was very concerned about his own carrier. He wanted to prove to his father, that he is not a looser and that he can make him proud. Deep inside he wasn’t a bad person and then he found out what accompany is doing to costumers he had to choose between right and wrong. Although, he enjoyed working in the firm and was good at what he did, he understood that he is destroying people’s lives and their trust. One positive think came out from this scam that was then he decided to return money to his costumer, although, it was illegal it was ethical. Different people have different views of what’s ethical, and what’s not in business world. Lack of rules and pure enforcement of rules that exist create opportunities for unethical behavior. I think, one has to decide for themselves what is ethical and what is not. An activity approved of by most members of an organization and customary in the industry is probably ethical, but it could be unethical to one or few individuals, because everybody has their own ideas and beliefs about what’s ethical and what’s not.

Humour and Leadership

Leaders in today’s cut throat world of corporate industry face an enormous challenge. In the midst of achieving the organisation’s goals and pursuing profits, how do leaders build teamwork, motivate their subordinates, convey their sometimes demanding managerial concerns and reduce stress in a way that produces positivity and productivity? Is it possible to be serious at work without actually being serious at work? To answer this question, this essay will look at research surrounding leadership characteristics and investigate how humour can practically have an impact on leadership effectiveness. How do we define humour? Humour is a verbal or nonverbal activity eliciting a positive cognitive or affective response from listeners and must be connected to context in order to be truly funny. The definition includes puns, jokes, stories, anecdotes, physical actions etc (Meyer, 1990). According to Sarros and Barker (2003), humour is the ability to invoke laughter or see the funny side of a painful predicament. In their study of Australian managers, Sarros and Barker (2003) established that the character attribute of humour was rated the second highest behind integrity. Humour may seem an unlikely component for a leader, however Barker and Coy (2003) also recognised the importance of humour. They identified seven virtues by which Australian executives could be identified and humour was included. Eckert and Vehar (2000) state: â€Å"It’s possible to do serious work without being serious. In fact, it’s actually counterproductive to do it any other way. Research on environments that foster innovation shows that playfulness and humour are critically supportive elements. We can be serious about what we’re doing without taking ourselves seriously, and we must. With humour in the workplace being established as a component for effective leadership, the way in which it is used needs to be looked at. According to Anderson (2011), humour is best when it is used deliberately, and advises it to be planned but flow naturally according to one’s personality. There are many opportunities for humor to be used. While the telling of a joke is a good starting point, humour that uplifts is much more positive and this can occur during speeches, within memos or even at the conclusion of an email (Avolia et al 1999). There are many benefits as to why a leader would use humour in the workplace. According to Davis and Kleiner (1989), humour has the potential to achieve three outcomes, these are, 1. Stress Reduction in the workplace, 2. Conveying managerial concerns and 3. Motivating employees. Hughes and Avey (2009) add weight to this as their research suggests that when a leader uses humour, they elicit a greater commitment from their followers to the organisation and build a much deeper level of trust. Furthermore Holmes and Marra’s (2006) research on humour in the work place identified a wide range of functions including the use of humour as a solidarity strategy, establishing, maintaining and developing workplace relationships and contributing to the process of creating a sense of team through humour as a subversive strategy, contesting, challenging and undermining the achievement of workplace objectives. Humour in the workplace is incredibly profitable for some organisations. According to Stevenson (2004) organisations are starting to see the important role that humour plays towards leadership, motivation, innovation and creativity. Some of these initiatives have been stated by Morreall (1983) and include such organisations as Kodak and Price Waterhouse establishing humour rooms within their buildings. He goes on to add that because humour has such a profound affect on the body, even hospitals are using it to enhance the healing process. You could argue that God, through Solomon’s writings, has always been aware of the powerful impact humour can have; â€Å"A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones. † Proverbs 17 v 22 (TNIV 2005). I am currently working as a youth worker for a not for profit organisation. The nature of working in community welfare can be at times be extremely serious, so to counter the seriousness our team have written into our yearly plan to include times of spontaneous dancing in the office. Not that anyone can seem to dance with any real coordination or skill. However it’s exactly the opposite and it allows our team to laugh at and with each other as a way of building morale and combating stress relief. Not all leaders are funny and not all humour is effective. When a leader tries too hard to be funny, it has the potential to undermine their leadership. If the humour is seen as sarcastic or mean spirited, it will certainly alienate staff (Sala 2003). In a list of cautions given by Jonas (2004), who agrees with the idea that humour should be handled like hazardous material, the list of cautions include: Aggressive or put down humour which attacks people or humour based on topics which centre on sex or illegal activity. One would have to include humour which degrades gender and humour which slanders religious beliefs also. Avolio, Howell and Sosik (1999) found that some employee's view the use of humor to be inconsistent with the seriousness of the issues being examined and, depending upon the circumstances, the inappropriate use of humor may have detracted from, rather than contributing to, the eventual outcomes. In some instances, Avolio et al. also believe the use of humour leads employees to view their leaders as insensitive to their needs. When a leader uses humour, there is significant potential for good outcomes. Humour has the ability to go beneath the surface and affect the working environment to such an extent that organisations are seeing the benefit of including ‘humour rooms’ within their organisation. A simple joke about work which is shared among colleagues has the potential to build solidarity and form a bond between colleagues which in turn provides a more positive working environment and greater productivity. While there are some dangers in using humour, however a leader who uses humour wisely can most certainly have an effective and positive impact in their workplace.

Essay on Natural Symbolism in A Farewell to Arms - 1723 Words

Natural Symbolism in A Farewell to Arms As with many other authors of fictional novels, Ernest Hemingway was often noted for his use of symbolism in his numerous pieces of literature. Natural symbolism plays a significant role in Hemingway’s novel, A Farewell to Arms. This novel uses aspects of nature to structure the plot and provide symbols that replace human emotions. Nature serves as a source of symbols which replace human sentiment or feelings, making the situation seem somewhat less serious. For example, when characters die, there is no mention of pain or suffering, rather it is simply stated that it is raining, or it is autumn. This separation of the seasons sets up the transition in the plot from good to bad: good being represented by the dry season, bad by the wet season. Therefore, the opening scene which is described as being ‘dry and white’ (Hemingway 3) changes drastically by the end of the story, where the river has turned into a raging torrent. This contrast of ‘good’ and ‘bad’ is also displayed by the events which occur on hard versus soft surfaces. For example, the first military operation is rapidly paced, with the wounded being rushed away in ambulances, and everything from the roads to the operating tables are described as being ‘hard.’ This is the opposite of the second military action, a defeat, that occurs on wet roads, with vehicles becoming submerged in the mud, and where rivers have to be crossed instead of river beds. Therefore, it is proven that the dry, first half of the novel is a more productive, successful version of the wet, sickl y world which proceeds it.
